The First Reparative Surgery Programme for Victims of Domestic Violence was created by TheBridgeGlobal for SBCP (Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery). It aimed to expedite the care of the network of women who need free reparative plastic surgery to injuries caused by domestic violence.
The project was also supported by the State Secretariat of Public Security. Using a telephone answering service, women were referred to a toll-free number and were selected for medical care and subsequent surgery. The pilot project started in São Paulo, with the participation of 11 public hospitals and 100 volunteer doctors. This project received 1685 calls and 129 women were assisted. Around 30 plastic surgeries have been performed.
For this project, Leonor de Sá Machado was awarded the Ruth Cardoso Award, for her work on behalf of women in the State of São Paulo.
